Neurodiversity Affirming Statement
Neurodiversity refers to the natural, broad, and full spectrum of differences within the human brain and nervous system, including variations in cognitive, sensory and emotional experiences. It is a broad umbrella term that includes, but is not limited to, people who identify as autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic, highly sensitive persons, and can include a range of mental health disorders, chronic stress, and trauma.
A Neuro-affirming lens recognizes natural differences in neuro-types as a normal expression of human diversity - not as problems or deficits to be “fixed”, “cured”, or “treated.”
It acknowledges a range of experiences and support needs and views neurodiversity as an asset to humanity. Neurodivergence can be an important part of someone’s identity.
What this means in practice:
We listen, value, and trust your lived experience. You are the expert. We are here to partner with you.
We respect differences and support an individualized plan of care - including communication preferences, sensory comfort, and pacing needs.
We work to support felt-safety, reduce pressure and masking, support authentic expression of yourself, where you can be without judgement or expectation. All parts of you are welcome here.
We incorporate integrated knowledge into our approach - knowing that neurodivergent individuals are more likely to experience trauma and chronic stress, and benefit from exploration of tools and strategies that work best for you.. We strive to continually learn and deepen our understanding to provide an inclusive and affirming therapeutic space.
We celebrate your strengths, differences, creativity, and perspective, while also acknowledging the challenges and stressors in your life.
We acknowledge caregivers and/or parents may have their own support needs and deserve access to care as well.
If you have any questions about how this looks in practice or would like to explore if our therapists might be a good fit, please reach out.
